Rising Water Experiment

This is a fantastic way to amaze your little scientists on Halloween. A simple experiment, rising water is a great addition to baffling halloween experiments for preschool and elementary kids who are learning about air pressure.

Take a flat deep dish and add little water to it. Mix food colouring to the water. We chose red to fit it into the Halloween theme.

Place a tea light in the middle of the plate and light it up. To make the water rise, place a glass on the candle. In a few seconds the candle will extinguish and the water will magically rise up in the glass.

Strange, right? While we want you to believe in magic as we are into the Halloween season, there is really simple science behind this experiment.

The candle heats up the air above it in the glass, increasing the air pressure in the glass. Once the candle has consumed all the oxygen in the glass, it goes out. This reduces the heat, causing the air in the glass to cool and contract.

Thus, decreasing the air pressure within the glass in comparison to the air pressure outside it. This forces outside air into the glass along with the water till the point air pressure is the same inside and outside the glass.

14. Candy Density Experiment

A great addition to Halloween science experiments for elementary students learning about density, this one hits the nail in the most fun and easy way.

Take two candies – one with plain chocolate and the other with nuts like Snickers or Reese’s peanut buttercups. Cut equal sized potions from each and drop them a glass of water to see which one floats and which one sinks.

Clearly, snickers sinks down owing to its high density thanks to the peanuts it packs while the plain milk chocolate floats. The same holds true for milk chocolates and chocolates with wafers.

Try this fun halloween STEM activity with other Halloween candies as well.
